Report of Training Workshop 2004
"How to create and maintain Circles of Compassion"
to help implement the United Nations Millennium Development Goals MDGs.
" For a world that works for all "
convened by WWSF Women's World Summit Foundation and Vivre Autrement
October 13-14, 2004 - John Knox International Center, Geneva, Switzerland
14 persons (including the trainers) gathered for a two-day training session
on "how to create Circles of Compassion" with the focus of creating a
world that works for all.

The trainers, Pierre and Elly Pradervand, presented the
guidelines for circle work (adapted from the Millionth Circle Initiative
and other circle work), the ancient art of dialogue in circle, the different
steps how to start a circle in one's community, and connect your circle
with the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to be reached by 2015.
The training was given in French both in plenary and
in smaller circles which gave participants the experience of being in
an intimate space. There communication centred around a specific theme
and circle guidelines were practiced. Themes included compassion and what
does it mean to live as a global responsible citizen today.
The quality of sharing was outstanding. The training
included an in depth introduction of the circle guidelines, background
of the Millionth Circle initiative, and a presentation explaining why
Circles of Compassion and why a World Day for Circles of compassion could
make a difference today in our very complex world. Presentations of shadow
work and on the importance of forgiveness and compassion were appreciated,
all the more as several participants added their own experience to the
session, which enriched everyone including the trainers.
The introduction of the United Nations Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs) was considered by many an important topic for discussion,
as it gives a concrete focus to circle work for those searching to include
development concerns.
Several participants shared their commitment to create
a Circle of Compassion in their community and felt that small training
sessions provide a better format for sharing in depth instructions on
how to begin and to ask clarification.
Participants challenged the organizers by proposing that
such Circle training sessions should be organized monthly to give more
and more people an opportunity to discover and try out the ancient circle
dialogue method.
