Prize Award Ceremony 2005This year, 20 Laureates received the WWSF Prize for Women’s Creativity in Rural Life, bringing the total number Laureates to 303 since its inception in 1994. ($500 per Laureate)Award ceremonies took place in many countries and Laureates were awarded and honoured by their nominators on 15 October, World Rural Women’s Day. On this occasion, WWSF Director Elly Pradervand, was invited to Togo (Africa) to personnaly award the Togolese Laureate, Ms. Christine Agnélé Mensah. The event gathered more than 5000 people, including the Head of State representative, 11 Ministres, 17 traditional Chiefs and many rural women’s groups.
In India (Gujarat State), Dhuliben Khant and Revaben Bariya, 2005 SEWA Laureates, received their Prize on 15 October. More than 3000 women, including rural and urban SEWA members, local Leaders, spearhead team members, organizers and SEWA’s (Self Employment Women Association) sister groups attended the event. The importance of the Prize was pointed out: “...women who are awarded, receive increased recognition in their villages. Communities start to respect women and appreciate the work they do for the village. This leads to an increased level of confidence among the women. This also helps them to do their work more efficiently and with confidence...”. As of date, eight rural SEWA women SEWA won the Prize since inception of the award.
