Open Letter 2005 to WWSF coalition Members and Partners

(non-governmental and governmental)

A global coalition for the creation of a culture of prevention

Over 1 million children are exploited every year in the multi-billion dollar sex industry, more than 14 million are orphaned by HIV/AIDS, some 300'000 are child soldiers, some 180 million children work in the worst forms of child labour, and 121 million children in the world are not in school of which 65% are girls. The 19 November World Day is a process for the emergence of a culture of prevention and for the promotion of responsibility, dignity and respect for the rights of the child. It is our mission to expand this process by reaching out to as many governmental and non-governmental organisations and institutions, educators, experts, professionals and parents as possible to rally a collective stand for zero tolerance for child abuse and violence.

Dear Coalition Members and Partners,

In its 6th year, the World Day has become an annual event commemorated by hundreds of local and national actors around the world. We celebrate this partnership with you and thank all those who marked the Day last year (500 organisations in more than 90 countries) and who sent us their reports of workshops, demonstrations, theatre plays, programs in schools, churches, on television and Internet, video clips, press releases and action alerts, all focusing on either physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse, neglect and violence. Global impact reports are published on our web site http://www.woman.ch

Your work as coalition members is key in creating a new global culture where prevention of abuse against children will be everyone's concern and mandate. It is up to us adults to create a future where harm done to children will no longer be acceptable. It will indeed be a new world when children's rights are a priority.

For new coalition members, please find campaign objectives and working principles in previous Open Letters available on our website www.woman.ch/children/1-openletter.php

Brief Report - WWSF Conference and WWSF Prize Betty Makoni Ceremony 2004

The World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse was commemorated for the fifth consecutive year with a Conference-Debate "Progress in preventing child abuse - Annual Review III" at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Geneva. Swiss, European and international experts presented various prevention programs in different fields, including sport, theatre, youth associations, nursing, etc. Following the conference, WWSF announced and awarded the first four Laureate organizations with the WWSF Betty Makoni Prize for innovative prevention activities (US$ 5000) :

  1. First Laureate: Women Action Coalition Child Abuse - WACCA, Nigeria
  2. Second Laureate: Pakistan Council for Social Welfare & Human Rights - PCSW&HR (represented in Geneva)
  3. Two additional awards: Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse of East Asia, STA - CPCA, China, and the Vienna Network for Prevention of Sexual Abuse against Girls, Boys and Youth, Austria.

The event proved a success and a summary report together with the profiles of the four Laureate organizations is featured on Internet www.woman.ch/children/1-coalitionimpact.php & www.woman.ch/children/2-laureates.php
WWSF will select again this year four prizewinning organizations which will be announced early November and selected laureates will be awarded on the World Day.

2005 Call to Action

Adopt a Code of Conduct and Child Protection Policy

In order to ensure the protection of and assistance to children and create and maintain an environment, which prevents child abuse, we encourage you to adopt a Code of Conduct in accordance with the mandate of your organisation. The Code of Conduct applies to all staff, interns, volunteers and other individuals working with children.

The following points should be incorporated:

  1. Adopt a Code of Conduct that includes core values and guiding principles and sets out specific behavior requirements of all staff and others;
  2. Incorporate adherence to a Code of Conduct into new and existing employment contracts and relationships with staff and others;
  3. Encourage, advocate and promote the dissemination of the Code of Conduct in order to inform all current and future staff and others about their responsibilities and duties to ensure prevention of child abuse;
  4. Develop and include disciplinary procedures when violations of core values and principles occur: i.e. denunciation of a problem to the proper authority and cancellation of the work contract.

Use and promote the global yellow ribbon campaign:

“YES to prevention of child abuse!”

Place the yellow sticker on your door, computer or any visible site as a symbol of your stand for prevention of child abuse, to treat all children with respect and dignity and to take care and protect them from abuse and potential offenders. It is an illustrative tool for parents, adults and youth working with children, to remind that child abuse and violence are unacceptable and that values and standards of behavior have to be respected within families and institutions. The objectives of the ribbon campaign include the creation of zero tolerance of any abuse and violence as well as the expansion of public awareness of the need for effective prevention measures. WWSF invites you to use the enclosed stickers in your own organizations and homes and to order additional copies for your advocacy and outreach to make every home and institution in your country safe for children (US$ 20.- for 30 copies).

Continue to share information about violations of concern to their mandates with the

Regularly remind your government to keep its commitments made at the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children (UNGASS 2002) “protecting against child abuse, exploitation and violence”. Your message must be clear and unambiguous. The UN conference has mapped out a vision “A World fit for Children”, and children’s rights can’t wait.

Dear Coalition Members and Partners, we wish you a most successful World Day 2005. It is a privilege for us to serve you as coalition members and to move forward in creating a culture of prevention. We look forward to receiving your activity report 2005 for which we thank you in advance. We also invite you to support the WWSF World Day and yellow ribbon campaign with a donation, if you can. Our network is expanding and the work is increasing. To make a contribution or to order stickers, contact wdpca@wwsf.ch
